Tick, Costa Rica. Ticks, which are a sub-group of the mites, have a deservedly nasty reputation as parasitic carriers of disease. These small blood-suckers may harbor bacteria that they carry from host to host, infecting as they feed. They can transmit bacteria, protozoans, nematodes, and viruses, and are the second-worst vector for human diseases, after mosquitoes. The diseases they carry include Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, ehrlichiosis, babesiosis, and tularemia, among others.
