Irrigation circles, western United States. These circles of greenery in an otherwise brown and dry landscape signify the presence of center-pivot irrigation. In this type of system, water is pumped from an underground aquifer and distributed through a giant sprinkler hundreds of feet (more than 100 m) long that pivots around a central point. It is worth considering how long this system can work, given that it is based on fossil water supplies that are not being recharged.
