Cloud forests, as their name suggests, are rainforests located high on mountains so that they are often covered by clouds. They are notable for the high density and diversity of their epiphytes (plants growing on other plants). Like many other second-growth forests, the understory in this image is quite dense compared with a primary forest. Note the large tree stump in this image; this area was cattle pasture about 30 years ago.
