The 11,900 acre (4,800 ha) Buffalo Creek fire began on May 18, 1996, 12 years before this scene was photographed. Note the patchwork effects of this large fire: both in this stand and on the distant ridges, groups of fire-killed trees stand next to healthy survivors.
