Molting mountain goat, Glacier National Park, Montana. Mammals that have evolved to deal with very cold climates typically grow an especially thick winter coat before the cold weather hits, and molt to a lighter summer coat once the weather warms. This mountain goat--who was living at an elevation of about 6,600 ft (2,000 m)--is molting to its summer coat, as the large missing patches of fur indicate.
