Breadfruit. A staple food throughout its native Polynesia, the breadfruit has a slightly sweet, bread- or potato-like consistency when cooked. The British first attempted to introduce this cheap and prolific crop to their New World colonies in 1773 by sending Captain Bligh and the H.M.S. Bounty on a breadfruit tree collecting expedition. Bligh survived his crew?s famous mutiny and on a second voyage succeeded in establishing the breadfruit in Jamaica.
