This is a fine example of microhabitat variation; the nooks and crannies among the rock in this kopje provide significant temperature and moisture differences from the conditions outside the kopje.
Microclimate variation, Serengeti National Park, Tanzania. Although large portions of the Serengeti appear to be unbroken expanses of grassland or savanna, there is actually quite a lot of variation, especially on a small scale. For small plants and animals, rocky outcroppings known as kopjes offer a wide range of microhabitats or microclimates with different temperature and moisture levels based on the amount of sunlight they receive.
