Pea. Originally grown in the Fertile Crescent and the eastern Mediterranean about 10,000 years ago. Peas were originally eaten as a dried bean, only being eaten as a green vegetable about 500 years ago in Europe. Gregor Mendel performed his original genetic experiments on garden peas.
