Chickpea or garbanzo bean. Originally grown in the Fertile Crescent about 10,000 years ago, early farmers brought this species to the Mediterranean 6,000 years ago and to India 4,000 years ago. A key ingredient in both Middle Eastern and Indian food, this is one of the most widely planted of the legumes.
