Distant tropical rainforest, Monteverde, Costa Rica. Rainforests like this covered large swaths of the tropics until the 20th century, when they began to be cut for their lumber or to make room for agriculture. Those rainforests that remain, however, support extraordinary numbers of plant and animal species, many of which have not even been described by biologists.
