Wild carrot. Also known as Queen Anne's Lace, the wild carrot produces a showy and distinctive inflorescence (not seen here). After a significant amount of horticultural selection, the small, woody, virtually inedible root of this plant was turned into the carrot eaten today. It appears that cultivated carrots originated in Afghanistan, and that the orange version we know today was selected for in Holland in the 1600s.
