Room built with lumber from the 1938 hurricane, New Hampshire. The 1938 hurricane that struck New England with little warning was one of the most powerful on record. Vast areas of forest were flattened, including many of the small, remaining old growth stands in the region. After the storm, massive salvage operations took place, as workers quickly cut and stored lumber that might be usable. Many logs were placed in ponds to keep them from rotting. The wood used to build this room came from trees knocked down during the hurricane.
