Deforested hillsides during dry season, Costa Rica. This valley was probably deforested about 50 years before this photograph was taken, and for much of the time since, the land was used as cattle pasture. This image was taken during the five month long dry season, when little or no rain falls. During the rainy season, the landscape looks green and lush. The Gulf of Nicoya and the Nicoya Peninsula are just visible in the distance at the top of the image.
