Deforestation: clear-cuts and buffer strip by a river, North Carolina. Several rather large clear-cuts have been carved out of this forest, a couple of which are quite close to a river. There is debate about the relative costs and benefits of clear-cutting and other types of forestry, but there is no argument that cutting close to rivers and streams is unhealthy. The buffer being left here may not be sufficient to protect the river from runoff.
